Global Cycling Network: A Guide to Fixing Punctures Quickly
Are you currently sat on the side of the road thinking, “How am I going to fix this puncture?” Or maybe you’re just about to go out on your bike and you’ve realized you’ve got a flat tire. Well, fear not, because you’re in the right place. In this video, we will show you how to fix that puncture very speedily and get you back on the road in no time.
What You Need to Fix a Puncture
To fix a puncture, you’re going to need a spare inner tube, tire levers, a mini pump or track pump, and a set of Allen keys to remove the wheel from your bike. These tools are essential for a quick and efficient puncture repair process.
Removing the Wheel
The first step in fixing a puncture is to take the wheel out of your bike. If it’s your front wheel and you have a disc brake through Axle, simply unscrew the through axle and take it all the way out. The wheel will come out easily. If you have a rim brake, open up the brake pads, undo the quick release, and remove the wheel. For the rear wheel, switch to the smaller sprocket, undo the brake pads, and release the wheel. For more detailed instructions, refer to our video on how to remove a rear wheel.
Using Tire Levers
Once the wheel is out, use tire levers to remove the tire. Place the tire levers underneath the bead of the tire, working from the opposite side of the valve. Pop both tire levers in around 5 to 10 cm apart and lift them up to pop the tire over the rim. Use one tire lever to push the tire around the rim and remove the inner tube. Remember to check the inside of the tire for any objects that may have caused the puncture.
Replacing the Inner Tube
After removing the punctured inner tube, check for the cause of the puncture. Replace the tube with a new one, making sure to check the tire for any sharp objects before inserting the new tube. Inflate the tube slightly before placing it in the tire. Start by inserting the valve into the rim and tuck the rest of the tube into the tire. Work from the valve to push the bead of the tire onto the rim, making sure the tube is not pinched. Secure the valve lock ring and pump up the tire.
Final Steps
Once the tire is inflated, put the wheel back on the bike, align everything properly, and check the brakes. If you have a punctured inner tube that needs repairs, refer to our video on how to fix an inner tube. Remember to recycle old inner tubes instead of throwing them away.
In conclusion, fixing a puncture can be done quickly and easily with the right tools and knowledge. Following the steps mentioned in this guide will help you get back on the road in no time. So, the next time you encounter a flat tire, don’t panic, just follow these instructions and enjoy your ride.
